‘There is a defiant vulnerability to Astra's work, and an acceptance of self that is intoxicating. These pieces create an external, visual narrative of an interior life, containing snapshots of an absorbed art history, a sense of cultural experience, of travel, contemplation, family and identity.
Collage, digital and analog works, drawing and painting, all seem to serve this narrative drive - it is both a showcase and a subversion of influence, a celebration of a flawed past, leading to a better future.
Optimism through experience perhaps, and as viewers, we also seem to participate somehow. Astra brings universality to the personal.’
